Four students from across the state were recently awarded the Lewis Cenker Scholarship from HBAG. The Lewis Cenker Scholarship fund is a non-profit organization created in 1977 by HBAG to honor the late Lewis B. Cenker -an outstanding Georgian and a national industry leader. Scholarships are awarded each year to qualified students seeking a career directly related to the home building industry.
One recipient of the scholarship this year is Thomas Griger (HBA of Middle Georgia), a recent graduate of Perry High School. Thomas plans to attend Georgia Southwestern State University and is interested in Construction Management. Another recipient, John Huggins (BA of Metro Augusta), will be attending the University of South Carolina and plans to study Mechanical Engineering. John has always had an interest in construction, which prompted him to pursue an education in the field. A previous recipient, Alexis McCarley (Westside HBA), was awarded the scholarship again this year and plans to continue her education in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Southern University. Alexis is interested in benefiting the builder, owner, and environment through energy conservation research. Bailey Vandiver (Lake Oconee Area BA) is also a past recipient and will continue to pursue his civil engineering degree at the University of Georgia. Bailey stated, “My ultimate goal is to design residential communities and watch them rise from the ground up.”
We wish Thomas Griger, John Huggins, Alexis McCarley, and Bailey Vandiver great success in all of their studies and future endeavors!
Awards are made in an amount established by the Trustees of the fund. Funding is obtained by contributions from local HBA’s and individual members. Donations may be made in the form of cash, bonds, stock, real estate, etc. Individual, family, or company funds may be set up within the Lewis Cenker Scholarship Fund and will be designated as special funds. Special named and recognized funds require a minimum contribution of $35,000. This amount is set by the Trustees of the Fund. All local HBA’s are encouraged to make annual contributions to set up a special named fund. Donations may be made with the stipulation that they are for endowment purposes only, and they shall not be disbursed. Currently, 5 percent of the audited fund balance will be disbursed the following fiscal year.
