Georgia Tech Masters of Architecture Students, Bailey Rummler and Mitra Maghsoudloo meet House of Dawn residents and discuss their conceptual drawing of new shelter.

Steve Brock of Brock Built Homes is currently serving as volunteer Builder Captain for HomeAid’s total renovation of an apartment building at Making A Way Housing on Atlanta’s west side. This organization provides safe transitional housing and supportive services for individuals who are homeless, battling substance abuse, and living with HIV or mental illness. This project will enable Making a Way Housing to help an additional 32 homeless individuals annually.

In late April, HomeAid brought Georgia Tech Masters of Architecture Students, Bailey Rummler and Mitra Maghsoudloo to meet with House of Dawn. House of Dawn owns land near the current Second Chance Home and is fundraising to build on that site. Cobbled together from a single-family, modest ranch home, the current space houses five teenaged mothers ages 13-18 and their babies, a 24-hour staff person, and small childcare area. As a part of their coursework, Rummler and Maghsoudloo met with some of the young mothers residing at House of Dawn’s Second Chance Home to share and refine some conceptual drawings they created for the new home.

HomeAid works in partnership with the building industry, as well as community building organizations, to assist people experiencing homelessness. To date, HomeAid Atlanta has completed over 100 housing, remodel and care day projects at locations that serve victims of domestic violence, teen mothers, veterans and more.
